Creating a Poolside Retreat with a Guest Bathroom Remodel

Efficiency and convenience are often the driving forces behind people’s desire to remodel their homes to achieve a space that perfectly caters to their needs. This is exactly what an empty-nester couple in DeKalb, Illinois, who enjoy entertaining by their backyard swimming pool, was facing. They aimed to transform their bathroom into a seamlessly accessible and guest-friendly space.

Partnering with Ken Spears Construction ensured their vision of a functional and inviting bathroom became a reality.

Overview

The couple frequently hosts family and friends for poolside gatherings, making an inviting and functional guest bathroom essential. However, the existing bathroom near the pool no longer matched their style, and the large linen closet consumed valuable space. They sought a remodel that would offer more usable storage and provide direct access to the pool.

Challenges for the Homeowner

The homeowners faced several challenges in updating their bathroom. They wanted to modernize the style, increase storage capacity, and eliminate the bulky linen closet, which was consuming valuable space. They aimed to create a more open and functional area with practical storage solutions

Additionally, they wanted an exterior door to the bathroom, allowing guests to access the pool area without walking through the house.

How We Helped Them Reach Their Objectives

Following an in-home consultation, we started a comprehensive renovation to meet the homeowners’ needs. We replaced the existing tub with a spacious shower featuring large marble tile walls, a generous bench seat, and elegant brushed bronze fixtures. The outdated linen closet was removed, and we opened the space by installing custom-built cabinetry for enhanced storage.

The floor was upgraded to a stylish 12×24 rectangular tile in a herringbone pattern. We refreshed the baseboards and moldings with crisp white paint and modernized the cabinets, countertops, and mirror to complete the transformation.

Design Elements Used

The bathroom remodel was crafted with a blend of style and functionality. It started with Shaker-style cabinets made from maple wood with a rich pecan shell stain. The countertops, bench seat, and shower curb were all finished in Daltile One Quartz and Calacatta Alabaster.

We recessed linen cabinets into the wall to enhance the bathroom’s functionality and aesthetic, creating a sleek, built-in appearance. Above the toilet, floating shelves matching the cabinetry provide additional storage while maintaining a clean, streamlined look. A stylish 2×10 subway tile was installed above the vanity, positioned behind the mirror for added visual interest.

The fixtures complement the design. Kohler Margaux vanity and shower fixtures in vibrant brushed bronze offer a striking contrast to the soft tones of the quartz and tile. The handheld shower from Kohler Artifacts, also in vibrant brushed bronze, adds both style and convenience. For comfort and better accessibility, we included a Kohler Memoirs comfort-height toilet.

The shower walls are adorned with Daltile Marble Attache Lavish tiles in a polished finish, while the bathroom floors feature the same marble tile but in a matte finish, providing a cohesive and elegant flooring solution.
